All these authors, along with many others participated in a campaign fund raiser called Books for Barrack. Basically these authors donated signed copies of their books in response to an email from another author, Ayelet Waldman.
These books were offered to supporters of Obama who contributed $ 250 to his funds. 10 books at random were packed into a bag and given to each contributor. The contributor thus got books far cheaper than what he would have paid for them in the open market (including some first editions) and contributed to Obama's campaign in the process.
